Readiness depends on the injury, current walking tolerance, strength and the response to impact. A return after a mild muscle problem will differ from a return after surgery or a bone stress injury.
For many runners, a short walk–run session gives a controlled way to test the next step. Keep track of how it feels during the session, afterwards and over the next day or two. If symptoms escalate or linger, the plan may need to step back or the diagnosis revisited.
WHEN TO GET HELP
After surgery or a suspected bone stress injury, follow the treating team’s clearance and individual restrictions.
