A hamstring strain often starts with a sudden pain during faster running. Recovery involves more than waiting until walking is comfortable. The muscle eventually needs to tolerate the demands of your usual running, including pace, longer strides and hills when relevant.
A graded plan might build strength and running exposure before faster work returns. Progression depends on the injury and how it responds, particularly if this is a repeat injury. Avoid using a single pain-free jog as proof that every session is back on the table.

Sudden severe pain, extensive bruising or difficulty walking needs an appropriate assessment.
